AES 2010: Novation Ultranova (Video)Analogue-modeling synthesizer
Among the many toys on display at this year’s AES was Novation’s latest instrument, the Ultranova. A PCM-based analogue-modelling synth, the Ultranova promises plenty of hands-on control, thanks to its eight touch-sensitive rotary encoders. These can be used to trigger envelopes, effects, filters and LFOs, as well as for tweaking synth parameters. The Ultranova also features a vocoder, for use with the line inputs or the supplied gooseneck microphone, while note-entry duties are undertaken by a 37-note Fatar keybed. Included with the Ultranova are not one, but two pieces of software: the Patch Librarian, which allows you to search for, save and recall patches, and an Ultranova plug-in, which lets you tweak the synth’s parameters from within your DAW. Usefully, the Ultranova can be powered via USB, though a wall-wart PSU is included for standalone use. Novation tell us that the Ultranova should be shipping from around the middle of December, and it will carry an RRP of £499, including VAT.
